Murphy's career-high leads Herons to 8th straight win

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Senior guard Jacqueline Murphy recorded her third consecutive double-double to lead the William Smith College basketball team to a 65-53 Liberty League victory at Skidmore College this afternoon. She scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the Herons to their eighth straight win.

Murphy was 5-of-12 from the floor with a 3-pointer, made 9-of-10 from the free throw line and handed out four assists. Junior forward Chloe Hayter also notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Erin O'Brien came up just short in her bid for a third Heron double-double, finishing the game with 11 points and a game-high seven assists. Senior guard Sasha Borenstein added eight points with a pair of 3-pointers, marking the 27th consecutive game she has canned at least one trey.

William Smith (9-2, 2-0 Liberty) shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the first half, including 3-7 from beyond the arc. The Herons earned just two trips to the line in the first half, making one. In the second half, William Smith's shooters cooled off (32.4%), but the Herons were perfect from the charity stripe, converting all 14 attempts.

Jordyn Wartts produced a game-high 21 points for Skidmore (5-7, 0-3). Molly McLaughlin chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds, and a team-high four assists. They were the only two Thoroughbreds to reach double figures in the scoring column.

Skidmore made 30.8 percent of its shots from the field with eight 3-pointers. The Thoroughbreds made 77.8 percent of their shots from the line, but earned just nine trips to the stripe.

William Smith opened the contest with a 12-0 and never trailed. Murphy powered the opening run with six points. McLaughlin made a jumper with 6:32 left in the opening half to make it a one-point game, but a seven-point burst from the Herons pushed the lead out to eight. William Smith went into the locker room with a 28-22 lead.

The Herons made another run to start the second half, scoring the sessions first eight points to bloat their advantage to 14. O'Brien registered four of the eight points.

After junior Molly Breen's layup at the 13:35 mark put William Smith in front 40-26, the Herons went over four minutes without scoring another point. Skidmore took advantage of the slump, scoring 12 straight points to close the gap to just two. Sophomore forward Lauren Brustein finally snapped the cold streak, putting William Smith up four and starting a 7-0 surge by the visitors.

The Thoroughbreds got within two twice more down the stretch, but each time the Herons had the answer. Wartts made a pair of free throws with 2:49 remaining to make it a 53-51 game, but William Smith finished the game on a 12-2 run, including a 10-for-10 performance at the line, to seal the victory.

The Herons return home for their next contest, hosting RIT in a Liberty League contest at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
