GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team will be raising awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer this weekend when the Herons host Clarkson and St. Lawrence universities. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to Bristol Gym on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
Â
Friday's game against the Golden Knights is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The Herons will wear pink shootaround shirts during the pregame. William Smith has won three games in a row to improve to 17-5 overall and 10-3 in the Liberty League. Clarkson is 8-11 overall, 3-8 in league play. The Golden Knights upended the Herons 69-57 when the teams last met on Feb. 1, in Potsdam.
Â
Saturday's contest against the Saints will begin at 2 p.m. SLU is in first place in the Liberty league with a 9-1 record, 13-6 overall. St. Lawrence beat William Smith 56-48 on Jan. 31 in Canton. The game against the Saints will also double as Senior Day, with the Herons honoring the Class of 2014 prior to tipoff.
Â
The Heron basketball team will be accepting financial donations on behalf of
Embrace Your Sisters, a not-for-profit charity serving Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne and Yates counties. EYS provides people diagnosed with breast cancer with short-term emergency financial assistance. EYS helps ease the difficulty of mounting medical expenses as well as helping make ends meet when people are unable to work due to illness or treatment.
The William Smith Athletic Department hosts several fundraisers throughout the year on behalf of Embrace Your Sisters.
Â
William Smith's Embrace Your Sisters Weekend is inspired by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Play 4Kay initiative. The annual fundraiser for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund turns high school and college gyms across the country pink in memory of Kay Yow, the former women's basketball coach at North Carolina State who died from breast cancer in 2009.
