Herons to compete in Liberty League tournament this weekend

The William Smith College lacrosse team will travel to Troy, N.Y., to compete in the 2014 Liberty League Tournament this weekend. The second seeded Herons will take on third seeded Union in a semifinal game on Friday, May 2 at top-seeded RPI's Renwyck Field at 4 p.m.
 
William Smith brings an 8-7 overall record into the tournament and finished the season with an 8-1 record in league play. The Herons and the Dutchwomen (9-6, 7-2) just met to close out the regular season on April 26 on Boswell Field. William Smith came away with a 14-9 victory. Sophomore Hannah Connolly led the Herons with seven goals. Sophomore Meg Hannan chipped in three assists and junior Rachel Hughes produced five ground balls, three draws and four caused turnovers. Ciara Dudeck led Union with four goals and an assist.
 
Connolly leads William Smith with 48 points and 35 goals this season. Junior Kate Sipple has notched a team-high 20 assists adding 23 goals for 43 points. Hughes has posted a team-high 56 ground balls, 50 caused turnovers and 30 draws. First-year goalie Sarah Honan has played the majority of minutes in goal. She's sporting a .465 save percentage and a 9.35 goals against average.
 
The tournament's other semifinal game between top-seeded Rensselaer and No. 4 Vassar will be played on Friday at 2 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at 3 p.m., with the winner earning an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
