Hobart tennis competes in St. Lawrence University Fall Classic

Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – The Hobart College tennis team competed in the 2014 St. Lawrence University Fall Classic Tournament this past weekend.
 
Senior Michael Fields, sophomore Michael Rusk, and first-year Miles Singer participated in the A Singles Flight for the Statesmen. Rusk won his play-in match 8-1 over RIT's Chandler Daub before losing in the first round to the eventual champion, Julian Danko of Rochester. Singer defeated his first round opponent, James Oliver of Hamilton, 8-4 while Fields bested RIT's Ben Lynaugh 8-3. Both Fields and Singer were eliminated in the quarterfinals, Fields 8-1 and Singer 8-3.
 
Sophomore Matt DePrima was joined in B Flight Singles by first-years Harry Nichols and Colin Marker. DePrima was topped in the first round by Aaron Mevorach of Rochester. Nichols reached the flight's semifinals winning his first match 8-2 over Ithaca's Nate Wolf and his quarterfinal match 8-3 over St. Lawrence's Marco Amendola. In the semifinals, Nichols was retired 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. Marker won his first match 9-8 (9-7) in a tiebreak before being defeated in the quarterfinals 8-4.
 
Senior Luke DeLuccia and sophomore Danny Kot represented Hobart in the C Singles Flight. Kot won his first round match against Ryan Zu of Rochester 8-4 but lost in the quarterfinals to Hamilton's Jake Vissichio by the same score. DeLuccia lost in the first round 8-5.
 
Kot and DeLuccia and Fields and DePrima partnered for the Statesmen in the A Doubles Flight. Both doubles teams lost their first match: Kot and DeLuccia 8-5 in the first round, Fields and DePrima 8-6 in the quarterfinals. Both teams won their consolation matches: Fields and DePrima 8-4, Kot and DeLuccia 8-3.
 
In the B Doubles Flight, Rusk and Nichols made a run to the semifinals. The pair defeated their first round opponents, Rochester's Keith Jensen and Ben Mermelstein 8-2. In the quarterfinals, they won 8-6 against the St. Lawrence pair of Kevin Frommer and Will Kauppila. In the semis, the Saints duo of Alan Shortz and Charlie Russell emerged victorious 8-5. Singer and Marker also paired up for a first round victory in the flight. They were defeated in the quarterfinals by the eventual flight champions, Hamilton's John Cohen and Alex Streich, 8-3.
 
The Statesmen return to action Sept. 20-22 when they host the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament at the HWS Tennis Center. Matches are slated to start at 9 a.m.
