Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Hobart College tennis team put forth a strong showing at the 2014 Flower City Invitational hosted by the University of Rochester this weekend.
Sophomore
Michael Rusk finished the weekend in third place in the A Flight singles competition. In the first round, Rusk defeated RPIs Brandon Mazzara 8-6. The quarterfinals saw him edge Rochester's Jonny Baker 9-7. In Sunday's semifinal action, Rusk was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Ian Baranowski but was able to secure his third place finish by winning his consolation match.
First-year
Miles Singer also won his first match in A flight singles but was dispatched in the quarter finals 8-3. Singer's classmate
Harry Nichols also defeated his first round opponent 8-1 but fell in the quarterfinals in the B Flight singles.
Senior
Michael Fields teamed up with sophomore
Matt DePrima for a second place finish in the A Flight doubles competition. In Saturday's first round match up the duo defeated Rochester's Ben Mermelstein and Damani Eubanks 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. In their next match, Fields and DePrima fought off two match points while down 7-6 to prevail 9-8 (8-6) and set up an all Statesmen semifinal. On Sunday, the Hobart team of Fields and DePrima squared off against sophomore
Danny Kot and senior
Luke DeLuccia with Fields and DePrima emerging victorious 9-7. RPI's McKinley Grimes and Brandon Mazzara beat the Hobart pair 8-6 in the championship match.
Kot and DeLuccia advanced to Sunday's all Hobart semifinal by defeating the RPI duo of Tristan Wise and Sundar Devakottai 8-6 in Saturday's first round match. In the quarterfinals, they topped Rochester's Jonny Baker and Sam Leeman 9-7.
Rusk teamed up with Nichols for a first round 8-4 victory over Al Grullon Gonzalez and Will Dickie of RPI while first-years
Colin Marker and Singer teamed up for a 8-6 victory in their first doubles match. Sophomores
Carson Smith and
Patrick Dunk also competed in doubles for the Statesmen.
Hobart returns to action next weekend when they travel to Canton, New York for the St. Lawrence University Invitational.
