Herons sweep home finale

GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College tennis team collected a pair of 9-0 victories on a blustery day at the HWS Tennis Center. In the first match of the day, the Herons defeated Cortland before sweeping Oneonta in the second half of the doubleheader.

With the pair of victories, William Smith is 7-7 overall this season and head coach Chip Fishback now has 202 career victories.

In the morning, the Herons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Sophomore Hannah More and senior Haley Wolf won 8-2 at No. 1.  In No. 2 doubles, junior Sydney Arsenault and first-year Michaelann Denton also notched an 8-2 victory. First-year Alex Cattie and sophomore Annie Venditti emerged victorious, 8-1, at No. 3.

In singles play, Venditti defeated Cortland's Kristen Parker, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Arsenault clinched the match for William Smith with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. Denton continued her undefeated spring, winning in the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-3. Cattie defeated Michelle Coffey 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. After winning 6-3 in her first set, Wolf survived a tough second set, winning 7-5 at No. 1. First-year Taylor Ferrari closed out the match for the Herons with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.

In the afternoon's match against the Red Dragons of Oneonta, William Smith once again cruised through singles play to open up a 3-0 lead. Wolf and More notched their second 8-2 victory of the day at No. 1 doubles. Arsenault and Denton also collected an 8-2 victory for the second straight match at No. 2. Cattie and Venditti faced a tough challenge in the No. 3 spot but pulled away to secure an 8-6 win.

Venditti was the first Heron off the court in singles play, beating Marina Salzano 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Wolf, who was competing in her last match at the HWS Tennis Center, clinched the overall victory for William Smith with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. Arsenault collected her second individual win of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Denton extended her team-best winning streak to 13 matches with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kelly Gochan. Cattie won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 while Ferrari completed the sweep with a 6-2, 7-5 win in the No. 6 spot.

William Smith will be back in action on Thursday, April 23, when they travel to Ithaca for a 4 p.m. match.
