ITHACA, N.Y. – The William Smith College swimming and diving team got off to a fast start at the 2016 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships today. The Herons broke two school records on the opening day of the championships.

Junior
Caroline Conboy led the way for William Smith, twice breaking her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley. In the morning session, she posted the fourth fastest time to qualify for the championship final. Conboy stopped the clock with a time of 2:08.51, lowering her own school record set in December at the Liberty League Championships. In the evening's final, she touched the wall fourth overall, posting a time of 2:07.86, lowering her own school record by 66-hundredths of a second.Â

The Herons established another school record in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore
Emily Haskins, Conboy, junior
Kelsey Bohl, and first-year
Kelley Mantz teamed up for a seventh place finish in the championship final. The relay team stopped the clock with a time of 1:50.75 and lowered the previous school record by 26-hundreths of a second.

Mantz also made the evening's finals in the 200 individual medley. She competed in the third level final, finishing fourth, 20th overall. She stopped the clock with a time of 2:16.01 to collect five points for William Smith. Bohl reached the evening's finals in the 50 freestyle. She turned in a time of 25.26 to finish third in the third level final and 19th overall, posting six valuable points for the Herons.

Through the first day of the UNYSCSA Championships William Smith sits in ninth place with 83 points. The Herons are nine points behind eighth place Nazareth and four points ahead of 10th place Alfred. The UNYSCSA Championships will continue tomorrow at 10 a.m.
