ORLANDO, Fla. – Hobart College and Connecticut College split the six singles matches as the Camels edged the Statesmen 5-4 victory late yesterday at the Lake Cane Tennis Center. The loss drops Hobart to 2-4 overall on the season.
Connecticut College (1-2) gained the early 2-1 edge after doubles play. The Statesmen won at No. 1 thanks to an 8-0 sweep from juniors
Danny Kot and
Michael Rusk. They improve to 4-2 as a doubles team this spring. The Camels won two close contests at No. 2 (9-7) and No. 3 (8-6).
The one point edge was all Connecticut College needed as the teams went 3-3 in singles matches. Junior
Harry Nichols tied the match at two with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ben Sachs at No. 4. After the Camels took a 3-2 lead, Rusk drew the Hobart even again, winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, knocking of Daniel Maffa. First-year
Jonah Salita rallied past Jonathan Kraiger, 5-7, 6-1, 10-2 in the top spot. The Camels clinched the match the overall match at No. 6 singles when Ethan Hecker won 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Junior
Patrick Dunk did not go down without a fight. Hecker had match point in the second set leading 5-3, 40-0, but Dunk came back to win the game and eventually force the tiebreaker in the set.
The Statesmen look to get back in the win column next Thursday, March 24, when they host Ithaca in Bristol Field House. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
