Relay sets another record on Day 2 at States

ITHACA, N.Y.-The William Smith College swimming and diving team eclipsed two more school records at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships today. The Herons 400-yard medley relay team twice lowered the school record and first-year Anna Leffler broke a 34-year old record with her 100-yard backstroke split.

Leffler, senior Caroline Conboy, sophomore Nicole Katchis, and senior Kelsey Bohl teamed up to break their second school record in two days. This morning they posted a time of 3:58.33, lowering the school record set at last year's state meet by nearly three seconds. The Herons posted the fifth fastest qualifying time. In the evening's championship final, Leffler, Conboy, Katchis, and Bohl finished fifth, lowering their record by six-hundredths of a second, stopping the clock at 3:58.27. In the leadoff leg, Leffler touched the wall at 59.50, breaking a 34-year old 100 backstroke record held by Vibeke Hopkinson '83. The record was the oldest remaining record on the books for the Herons.

William Smith's "B" relay team of junior Emily Haskins, sophomore Kelley Mantz, first-year Caroline Nash, and senior Kelsey McElwain finished sixth in the third level final, 22nd overall, with a time of 4:14.55. They dropped two seconds off of their morning preliminary swim.

William Smith started this evening's finals with a top-10 finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Bohl, Conboy, Haskins, and Leffler finished seventh overall, posting a time of 1:40.17, the second fastest time in school history, thirty-three-hundredths of a second behind school record pace.
