ITHACA, N.Y. – For the second straight year, senior
Caroline Conboy was crowned a state champion in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships. Through 29 events, the William Smith College swimming and diving team sits in eighth place with 321 points.
Conboy, who entered the championships as the top seed in the 100 breaststroke, stayed true to form, winning the event tonight with a season-best time of 1:03.33 and a NCAA "B" cut time. She out touched Rochester Institute of Technology's Amy Adams by 66-hundredths of a second. While the 100 time was not a school record, Conboy's 50 split time of 29.33 lowered her own school record set at the NCAA Championships last fall by six-hundredths of a second. She advanced to the finals with the preliminaries second fastest time 1:03.96. Sophomore
Kelley Mantz also advanced to the finals this evening. She finished fifth in the third level final, 21st overall, stopping the clock at 1:11.31.
First-year
Anna Leffler continued her spectacular rookie season today finishing eighth overall in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.72. Her morning swim of 59.38 lowered her own school record, set last night, by 12-hundredths of a second. Sophomore
Emily Haskins joined Leffler in the evening's finals. She placed third in the third level final, 19th overall, posting a time of 1:01.83.
Senior
Kelsey Bohl and sophomore
Nicole Katchis represented William Smith in the third level final of the 200 butterfly. Bohl won the final with a time of 2:13.99, while Katchis finished third, stopping the clock at 2:16.89.
On the diving board, sophomore
Therese Mandracchia finished tenth overall with a score of 361.35.
With one day of competition remaining, William Smith remains in eighth place. The Herons are 117 points behind seventh place Nazareth and 57 points ahead of St. Lawrence. Ithaca leads the team competition with 1126.5 points.
The fourth and final day of competition gets underway with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. Finals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Conboy will look for a second state title in the 200 breaststroke.
