Herons meet Tigers in NCAA 3rd round

The William Smith College lacrosse team will take on Colorado College in an NCAA tournament third round game hosted by Washington & Lee in Lexington, Va., on Saturday, May 20 at 11:30 a.m.
 
Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students. Gates will open one hour before the start of each game. Fans unable to make it to Watt Field can follow the action online with Live Stats and Video through the Washington & Lee athletics website.
 
The Herons bring a 19-1 overall record into the game. William Smith is riding a 16-game win streak that began back on March 16. The Herons lead the nation in save percentage (.594) and rank second in win percentage (.950) and third in scoring defense (4.30).
 
Senior Alexandra Bird leads with team with 44 goals, 15 assists and 59 points. Junior Melissa Moore has a team-high 48 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers. Sophomore Bizzer Gahagan leads the way with 47 draws. Senior goalie Sarah Honan ranks second in the nation with a .594 save percentage and third with a 4.29 goals against average.
 
Colorado College in 15-4 this year. The Tigers topped Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 15-12 in their second round game to advance to the round of 16. Colorado College leads the nation in draw controls per game (18.58) and ranks second in points per game (27.58) and scoring offense (19.21). In addition, the Tigers are fifth in scoring margin (8.74).
 
Steph Kelly leads the team with 107 points on 51 goals and 56 assists. She also has a team-high 105 draws. Kelly is seventh in the nation in assists and ninth in points. Mary Taussig leads the way with 54 ground balls and 42 caused turnovers. Zoe Frolik and Remy Wells have split time in goal this year. Wells is sporting a 10.94 goals against average, a .367 save percentage and a 12-3 record. Frolik has a 9.94 goals against average, a .325 save percentage and a 3-1 record.
 
The Tigers and the Herons have two common opponents this year, Bowdoin and St. Lawrence. William Smith's lone loss came at the hands of the then No. 14/12 Polar Bears 8-1 on March 14 in Port Charlotte, Fla. Colorado College also lost to Bowdoin 23-14 on April 22. The Herons topped the Saints 11-4 on April 21, and the Tigers fell to St. Lawrence 21-18 on March 23.
 
Colorado College has another connection to William Smith in its head coach. Susan Stuart is the only coach the Tigers' women's lacrosse program has ever had. The former Heron lacrosse goalie graduated from William Smith in 1989 and was inducted into the Heron Hall of Honor in 2007.
 
The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the NCAA quarterfinals where it will face the winner of the Washington & Lee vs. Catholic third round game. That game is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, at 2:30 p.m. on Watt Field.
