GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College Athletics Department will host a National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 3. The day's events begin with a sports clinic in the morning at Bristol Field House and wrap up at the Heron basketball game in Bristol Gym.
Girls of all ages are invited to a sports clinic in Bristol Field House. "Get On The Brain Train: Fun Ways To Think About Winning" will be the topic of the day led by legendary William Smith Head Soccer Coach
Aliceann Wilber. Wilber and several Heron athletes will use small and large group activities to teach strategies and tactics for winning in a wide variety of sports. Registration opens at 10:45 a.m. and the clinic starts at 11 a.m. The clinic, which ends at 12:30 p.m., also includes lunch for participants.
NGWSD began as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Since Hyman's death from Marfan's Syndrome while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan in 1986, NGWSD has evolved into a day to not only acknowledge the past, but also recognize the current sports achievements as well as the positive influence of sports participation and continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
The theme for this year's NGWSD is Play Fair, Play IX.
The celebration will continue during the William Smith basketball game in Bristol Gym. The Herons (11-8, 5-7) will tip off against Clarkson University (8-10, 3-8) at 2 p.m. William Smith takes on the Golden Knights for the second time this season, after the Herons earned a 67-53 win in Potsdam on Jan. 19.
William Smith is led by Geneva native, junior
Mia Morrison, who averages 17.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 1.6 spg and 1.1 bpg.
NGWSD activities during the game include face painting and an autograph session with the Herons following the game.
