Herons to host NCAA Championship opening weekend

The William Smith College soccer team is one of 16 hosts for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship. On Saturday, Nov. 13, the Herons will take on John Jay at 11 a.m. The contest will be followed by Hamilton vs Johnson & Wales at 1:30 p.m. The winners will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three contests will be played on Cozzens Field.
 
Tickets are $6 for general admission, $3 for senior citizens, military personnel and students (ages 13-college), children ages 3-12 are $2. Children under 3-years old are admitted free. HWS students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with a valid HWS ID courtesy of the Heron Society.
 
William Smith is ranked third in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and third in the D3soccer.com poll. The Herons earned their 14th straight Liberty League Tournament Championship, and has a 16-1-1 overall record. William Smith clinched the Liberty League's automatic bid into the tournament with a 3-2 double overtime victory over Ithaca on Sunday. The Herons are making their 31st NCAA tournament appearance (61-22-10) and are seeking their third national championship (1988, 2013). William Smith enters the tournament on a 15-match winning streak and is 11-0-1 at home this season.
 
John Jay brings a 9-5-0 overall record to Geneva. The Bloodhounds won the City University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament and earned the league's automatic bid, defeating Lehman 1-0  on Saturday. John Jay is making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament (0-1-0). The Bloodhounds have won their last four contests.
 
Hamilton is 13-2-2 overall and ranked 17th in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and 19th in the latest D3soccer.com poll. The Continentals earned an at-large bid into the tournament after falling to Wesleyan in the New England Small College Athletic Conference semifinals. Hamilton is making its fifth appearance in the NCAA tournament (4-4-1).
 
Johnson & Wales is 17-3-2 overall this season. The Wildcats scured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship with a 3-0 win over Lasell, earning the league's atumatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Johnson & Wales is making its fourth trip to the NCAA tournament (0-3-0). The Wildcats enter the tournament on a seven-game win streak.
