GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College Athletics Department hosted its annual Block H Awards celebration this afternoon. Hockey senior
Mike Faulkner was presented with the Francis L. "Babe" Kraus '24 Memorial Award as the senior athlete of the year.
Faulkner, a defenseman, led the Statesmen to three straight NCAA Championship appearances, playing in 78 career games as Hobart went 59-19-10. He finished his career with 52 points on 8 goals and 44 assists. A three-time NEHC All-Tournament Team selection, Faulkner was named to the 2019-20 All-NEHC second team after notching a career-high 21 points on a goal and a team-high 20 assists. Faulkner was the 2019-20 Boswell Award (team MVP) recipient and the 2017-18 Solomon Award winner as the Hobart Athletic Department's rookie of the year. He was an alternate captain during his junior year and captain this year. Faulkner twice produced a career-high three assists in a game, both times against Southern Maine.
The William C. Stiles '43 Memorial Award for leadership, determination and character was presented to senior rower
David Ranney. A team captain, he was in 2 seat for the varsity eight at the Liberty League Championships this past weekend. The Statesmen won the gold medal by more than 20 seconds over the second place crew. It was the program's 17th straight victory in the varsity eight at the league championship. He won a gold medal in the second varsity eight at the 2019 NIRCs, a year after winning a bronze in the varsity eight. Ranney and the second varsity eight finished 17th at the IRA National Championships, the highest finish for that boat at nationals.
Tennis senior
Walker Anderson and basketball senior
Dan Masino shared the Hanna Award for Excellence. The award recognizes dedication to the community, exceptional academic achievement, trustworthy leadership and dependability as a teammate.
Anderson has won 61% of his career singles matches and 65% of his career doubles match, winning the 2018 ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Championship on his way to ITA All-America honors. This season, he is playing No. 1 singles (5-2) and doubles (6-1) for the Statesmen, leading them to a 6-1 record and the No. 2 seed in the Liberty League Tournament, which begins on Wednesday. Anderson is a two-time All-Liberty League selection in both singles and doubles.
A history and psychology major, Anderson is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and a three-time Liberty League All-Academic team member. He is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Masino was a three-year starter for the Statesmen, averaging 11.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals. He averaged 11.8 points and 5.2 rebounds as a first-year on his way to Liberty League Rookie of the Year honors. Masino played just four games as a sophomore before suffering a season-ending injury. He came back to lead Hobart to its best season in 2019-20. Masino averaged 12.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists as the Statesmen tied the program record for wins, going 23-5. He scored the biggest basket of the season, making a layup with two seconds remaining to lift Hobart to a 62-61 win at No. 17 Springfield and send the Statesmen to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.
An economics major, Masino is a three-time Liberty League All-Academic Team member and a 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. He is a Druid, Hobart's senior class honor society, and a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honor society in economics.
