Hobart College junior sailor
Chase Carraway and senior squash player
Quinn Udy were presented with the William "Myles" Silverman '20 Award at this year's Block H Awards celebration.
The Silverman Award is presented to a cross country, golf, tennis, sailing or squash student-athlete whose performance in his individual sport has been exceptional. The award is sponsored by the Office of Student Life and is named after Myles Silverman, Class of 2020, who represented Hobart College at the USCSA Collegiate National Championships in 2018, 2019 and 2020. He won all five snowboarding national championships he entered, earning five All-American awards. The first Hobart student to win a title in an individual sport, Silverman also competed on the international stage at the World University Games, reaching the finals of both the slalom and giant slalom, and World Cups during his time at Hobart.
Carraway won the Silverman award for the second straight year. He finished second at the 2021 LaserPerformance Men's Singlehanded National Championship in Newport, R.I., earlier this month. Carraway was making his third appearance in the singlehanded championship. His second place finish was the best by a Statesman since Trevor Moore '07 finished second in 2006. In his previous trips to the championship, Carraway was fourth in 2019 and ninth in 2018. He finished this year's regatta with 58 points, 14 behind Georgetown's Thomas McMann. Carraway crossed the line in the top 10 in all but one race and posted three victories. Carraway also sailed as a skipper at both of the MAISA North Qualifiers, dinghy and team race.
Carraway has competed in 22 regattas during his career. He won the Rookie Award for Sailing in the 2018-19 season. As a sophomore he finished third at the Car Van Dune Trophy Regatta, the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship, and helped HWS claim the David Lee Arnoff Trophy.
