CORTLAND, N.Y.—The William Smith golf team finished eighth at the CORTACA NE Invitational co-hosted by SUNY Cortland and Ithaca College this weekend. The 36-hole tournament was played at RaNic Golf Club in Ithaca on Saturday and Cortland Country Club on Sunday.

Justine Burness led the Herons on both days on her way to a tie for 23rd place in a field of 58 golfers. She shot an 86 on Day 1 and closed with an 87. Emma Nedeau was one stroke behind Burness after the first round, but faded on Day 2, finishing tied for 34th. Ashley Byron and Brooke Hogle completed William Smith's team score, finishing tied for 49th and placing 53rd, respectively.

Hamilton's Maddie Hong finished 11 over par to earn individual medalist honors and lead the Continentals to the team title. There was a three-way tie for second, one shot back of Hong's 155 for the weekend. Hamilton was 16 shots clear of runner-up Ithaca. Westminster was third followed by Cortland, Union, Suffolk, Nazareth, William Smith, Cabrini and St. John Fisher.

The Herons will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule Oct. 9-10 at the Nazareth Invitational.
