CANTON, N.Y.—It was another record-breaking day for the William Smith College golf team on Day 2 of the St. Lawrence Invitational. For the second day in a row,
Emma Nedeau broke the program's 18-hole record and in the process eclipsed the 36-hole record. Likewise, the Herons posted the lowest 18-hole team score in as many days for a Heron record two-day tournament total.
After shooting an opening round 78 the broke the previous record by three strokes, Nedeau played the front nine at Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course in even par this morning. She used a pair of birdies to negate a double bogey on six. On the back nine, she birdied 11 and pared the final three holes to finish with a 77. Nedeau's two-day total 155 surpassed the standard established by Lauren Carlson '11, who posted a 167 twice during her career. Nedeau placed 10th out of 32 golfers.
Each of Nedeau's teammates shot a career-best round today, collectively recording a 329, 15 strokes better than yesterday's record-breaking round. William Smith's team tournament score of 673 marks the first time the team has finished a 36-hole tournament under 700.
Lark Ervasti fired rounds of 83 and 81 for a two-day total of 164, tying for 17th place.
Justine Burness put up an 86 in the first round and closed with an 83 for a 169, placing 21st.
Ashley Byron made the team's biggest improvement from the first round to the second, following a 97 with an 88.
William Smith was fifth out of six teams. NYU, which won the 2019 national championship in its last full season of competition, won the team title. The Violets had the top five finishers in the field, including individual medalist Madison Phung, who was two under for the weekend. SUNY Cortland (623) was second in the team standings, 51 strokes back. Ithaca (628), Union (644), William Smith (673) and the host Saints (754) rounded out the field.
The Herons will return to competition Sept. 11-12 when they compete in the Hamilton Invitational at Yahnundasis Golf Club.
