Box Score MADISON, N.J.— The Hobart College tennis team had a strong showing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Northeast Regional Championships which was headlined by senior
Jett Wright and junior
Sean Pesin advancing to the doubles bracket championship. The Statesmen duos strong performance qualified them for the ITA Cup on Oct. 13-16 in Rome, Georgia.
SINGLES ACTION:
- Senior Harry Lyu had a strong weekend, making it to the quarterfinals in the singles bracket. On his journey in Madison, Lyu defeated Shivendra Perera from Drew (6-1, 6-1), Harrison Maitland-Carter from TCNJ (6-2, 5-7, 12-10), and Sergiu Celebidachi from Skidmore (4-6, 6-1, 10-7) before falling to eventual champion Aiden Drover-Mattinen from RPI (6-4, 6-0).
- First-year Nick Fischer defeated Siddharth Tirupati from Rochester (7-5, 6-2), and Nico Luis Vega from Ithaca (6-3, 6-4) before falling to Connor Griff of Hamilton (6-1, 6-2) in the round of 16.
- Sophomore Nick Grosso defeated Nika Mori from Skidmore (6-2, 6-3) before falling to Krish Vennam from Rochester (6-4, 1-6, 10-8).
- Junior Sean Pesin defeated Christopher Tham from Baruch (6-1, 6-4) and Nikola Kilibarda from TCNJ (6-5, 7-5) before falling to Brendan Jimenez from Skidmore (4-6, 7-5, 11-9).
DOUBLES ACTION:
- Senior Guthrie Speers and Sophomore Hyat Oyer defeated James Harrington and Patrick O'Mara from Scranton (8-3) before falling to Matthew Michibata and Harrison Maitland-Carter from TCNJ (8-4).
- Lyu and sophomore Troy Steiner fell in the semi-finals to eventual champions Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu from RPI (8-6). To get them to the semi-finals Lyu and Steiner defeated Marcelo Garcia and Jaimie Stearkle from Houghton (8-1), Ronaldo Jacome and Akul Telluri from TCNJ (8-0) and Max Safanov and Igor Visnevskij from RPI (8-5).
- Wright and Pesin highlighted the weekend for Hobart making it to the doubles championship and earning a spot at the ITA Cup later this month. The duo defeated Sergiu Celebidachi and Brendan Jimenez from Skidmore (8-5), Abraham Yohannes and Sid Srinivasan from RPI (8-5) and Anson Anderson and Lorenzo Gunningham from Hamilton (8-3) before falling to Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu from RPI (7-6 (7-3), 6-4) in the double's championship.
COACHES CORNER:
"This weekend was filled with some really solid tennis," Head Coach Tim Riskie said. "Every player and doubles team competed at a very high level. Our players gained confidence in their ability to play at a high level and fight for every point. They played with purpose and intensity which was so much fun to watch. Credit to RPI for winning the singles and doubles championships this weekend. I am super excited for Jett and Sean to compete at the ITA Cup in a few weeks."
