ITHACA, N.Y.— The Hobart College swimming and diving team competed at the 2023 Liberty League Championships this week in Ithaca. The Bombers hosted the four day event in which the Statesmen made their debut after being recognized as a varsity sport for the first time since 1993-94.

In Wednesday's preliminary rounds, Hobart produced three top-50 finishers in the 50-yard freestyle event. Senior Avi Rajkarnikar led the Statesmen with a 36th place finish after clocking in at 24.78. Following closely behind was first-year Randall Dominguez in 40th with a time of 26.44 and William Sanderson in 41st with a time of 26.77.

Sanderson, Dominguez, Rajkarnikar and Mason Fairfield represented the Statesmen in the 200-yard freestyle relay, taking 10th place after posting a time of 1:45.35.

Domingues, Sanderson and Fairfield all posted their collegiate debuts in the pool for Hobart at the Liberty League Championships.

COACHES CORNER

"The guys put together a gutsy performance after being put into tough circumstances," said Head Coach R.C. Weston. "Avi battled all season long and walked away as our lone senior competitor hitting multiple lifetime best times. Randall and William stepped up within the last 3 weeks as our roster needed some help to finish out the year and surprised EVERYONE with how well they did. Big shoutout to assistant coach Austin Nau for putting in countless practice hours getting them up to speed. And finally, I'm forever grateful for Mason for answering the call when we went down a man earlier in the week and put our relays in jeopardy of not competing. Mason showed up and filled right in allowing us to score points in Hobart's first Liberty League Championship. It wasn't how the season was envisioned, but from humble beginnings we will grow something great, and those four guys, along with Danny, Tillman, Jamo, and Nico, will forever be part of our first team back."
