Herons finish 5th in Northeast Roundup

NEW CASTLE, Del.—The William Smith bowling team finished fifth out of 17 teams at the Northeast Roundup hosted by Wilmington University. The Herons went 1-4 in traditional matches on Saturday, but won all three of their Baker matches on Sunday and defeated seventh-ranked Mercyhurst in a seven-game series 4-3 to secure fifth place.
 
SATURDAY
  • William Smith faced four nationally-ranked teams in five matches to open the weekend.
  • The Herons lost a narrow 929-925 decision to No. 10 (NTCA DII/DIII poll) Kutztown.
  • William Smith rebounded with a 988-922 win over No. 7 (DII/DIII) Mercyhurst.
  • The Herons closed the day with losses to Molloy (962-943), No. 19 (NTCA all divisions) Fairleigh Dickinson (1024-967) and No. 23 (all) Niagara (965-902).
  • First-year Colleen Jump led William Smith with a 206.8 scoring average (10th out of 109 bowlers) that included three 200 games. She bowled a high of 224 against Kutztown.
  • Junior Michaela Morgan finished with a 201.6 average (16th). She rolled a team-high 245 in the win over the Lakers to go with a 236 against the Bears.
  • Sophomore Caitlyn Anschutz also had three 200 games, including a high of 225 against FDU.
 
SUNDAY
  • William Smith opened Day 2 of the tournament with a 967-936 Baker win over No. 16 (all) Merrimack.
  • The Herons followed that big win with victories over Chestnut Hill 963-907 and Bloomfield 925-866.
  • William Smith finished qualifying with 8,587 pins, fifth behind No. 12 (all) Mount St. Mary's (9,239), Merrimack (9,095), FDU (8,943) and No. 24 (all) Delaware State (8,936).
  • The Herons were just ahead of sixth place Mercyhurst (8,525), setting up a best of seven series against the Lakers for fifth place.
  • Mercyhurst took Game 1, but William Smith rebounded to win the next two for a 2-1 lead.
  • The Lakers won Games 4 and 5 and needed just one of the last two to secure the overall victory.
  • The Herons made sure that didn't happen, forcing a decisive Game 7 with a 225-179 win in Game 6 and sealing a 4-3 win with a 252-150 Game 7 triumph.
 
FOR THE RECORD
  • William Smith improved to 47-21 on the season.

  • The Herons will cap the regular season at the AMCC Championship in Pittsburgh March 22-24.
