CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team concluded its 2023-24 racing season competing in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Open Fleet National Championships on the Charles River over Memorial Day Weekend. HWS finished 18th overall
HWS advanced to the finals with an eighth-place finish in the Western Semifinals. Thirty-six teams started the weekend on Friday with the top nine teams in each semifinal advancing to the championship regatta. On Sunday and Monday, eighteen races were contested between the top 18 teams in the nation.
HWS finished the weekend with 441 points, three behind the two-way tie for 16th place. Senior
Will Murray and junior
Frances Depke competed in A Division. They finished 12th with 188 points, including 10 finishes inside the top 10. Murray and Depke were second in the 10th race.
In B Division, sophomore
Juan Carlos Lacerda Jones and first-year
Jeffrey Klempen split time as skippers. Junior
Rachel Duggan and first-year
Robert Breslin sailed as crew. They finished the weekend with 253 points. They had a second place finish in the fourth race and a third place finish in the final race of the weekend.
The hosts, Harvard, won the national championship by eight points over Yale. The two teams were tied with 220 points entering the final race of the weekend. Harvard was eighth and Yale 15th. Dartmouth rounded out the podium with 247 points.
HWS has made 24 appearances at the Open Fleet Nationals.
