Herons head to MAISA Women’s Championship

The William Smith sailing team will be back in action this weekend, March 28-29, when it travels to Kings Point, New York, to compete in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Fleet Race Championship. HWS will also be in New London, Connecticut, for the Vietor Trophy. Both regattas are set to begin at 10 a.m.
 
Sophomore Deana Fedulova, junior Ella Donaldson, sophomore Sabrina Starck, sophomore Olivia Wilkins, senior Lauren Therien and junior Maya Mahoney will represent William Smith in the MAISA Women's Fleet Race Championship. The regatta is hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The Herons will face Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, George Washington, Georgetown, Old Dominion, Princeton, NY Maritime, Stony Brook, St. Mary's, Merchant Marine, Navy, Maryland and UPenn.
 
At last year's MAISA Women's Fleet Race Championship, the Herons placed seventh with 212 points. Fedulova, Donaldson, Starck, and Wilkins all competed in last year's competition and placed eighth in both divisions. The Herons last won the MAISA women's championship in 2018. Since 1999, William Smith has won four MAISA fleet race championships.
 
The Vietor Trophy is hosted by Connecticut College and HWS will compete against Amherst, Boston University, Connecticut College, Florida State, Fordham, Maine Maritime, Northeastern, Ohio State, NY Maritime, Salve Regina, Tufts, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Michigan, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Webb Institute.
