The William Smith tennis team will travel to Saratoga Springs, New York, this weekend to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Women's Northeast Regional Championships, Sept. 21-23. Seniors
Natalie Haythorn and
Julia Pida will represent the Herons in the doubles bracket, while Haythorn and junior
Haley Levine will compete in the singles bracket.
Players from across the region will compete at the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center this weekend. The singles bracket will feature 64 players, while the doubles bracket has 32 teams. The singles and doubles champions, as well as the runners-up, will compete in the ITA Cup, the small college national championships, in Rome, Georgia, Oct. 10-13, 2024
For William Smith, the action will start on Saturday in the singles bracket when Haythorn takes on Vera Bondarenko from New York University at 9 a.m. Levine will then take on Samantha Rava from SUNY Geneseo at 10:30 a.m. in the round of 64.
The Herons will continue the action in the doubles bracket, as Haythorn and Pida play Bondarenko and Maria Vitoria Salomao from NYU in the round of 32.
At this year's Mary Hosking Invitational, Levine reached the Singles A Flight quarterfinals, while Haythorn also competed in the A flight. Pida had a strong showing in the C Flight singles, making it to the quarterfinals. The pairing of Haythorn and Levine put up a strong fight in the Doubles A Flight, competing against a duo from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Last year at the ITA Northeast Regionals, Levine made it to the round of 16 in singles play, defeating opponents from St. Lawrence and The College of New Jersey. The pairing of Levine and Haythorn defeated Juniata College in doubles action in the round of 16 where they then fell to St. Lawrence. Pida aims to make an impact in her second appearance at the Northeast Regional Championships.
