QUEENSBURY, N.Y.—The William Smith Alpine skiing team opened its 2025 season this past weekend at West Mountain. The Herons finished second of nine in the giant slalom race on Saturday, and second out of nine in the slalom on Sunday. William Smith currently sits in second place behind Colgate in the Mideast Conference standings.
In Saturday's giant slalom, which included 58 racers, William Smith had three top 15 finishers. Senior Marjorie Plants led the Herons with a third-place finish with a combined time of 2:23.36. Plants' second run of the day was the second fastest finish by any racer, with a time of 1:11.33. Sophomore Emily Cain finished the day in 10th place with a combined time of 2:31.54, while junior Katherine Broderick came in 13th with a time of 2:34.50.
In Sunday's slalom race, William Smith produced four top 15 finishers to clinch second place for the second straight day. Plants led the Herons again with a fourth-place finish and a combined time of 2:00.27. First-year Mia Crivelli finished eighth in her collegiate debut with a time of 2:06.17, while senior Emma McKenna stopped the clock at 2:14.00 to secure 12th place. First-year Madison Campisi chipped in a 15th place finish with a combined time of 2:21.21.

The Herons will be back in action next weekend for week two of USCSA action. The weekend will kick off with the giant slalom on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 9 a.m. on Labrador Mountain. Sunday's slalom races will be the following day at 9 a.m. on Greek Peak Mountain.
