Herons finish 2nd at Mideast Championships, qualifies for National Championships

Plants named to USCSA Mideast Conference First Team

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The William Smith Alpine skiing team was back in action this weekend, Feb 22-23, competing in the Mideast Conference Regional Championships on Bristol Mountain. The Herons finished in a tie for second place with Cornell with five points. First-year Lily Winch shined for the Herons, finishing third overall with 56.66 points.

William Smith took third place in Saturday's giant slalom race with a team time of 6:40.75. Winch finished in third place out of 38 racers with a combined time of 2:05.35. Sophomore Emily Cain finished 17th with a combined time of 2:17.39, while first-year Mia Crivelli followed close behind in 18th after stopping the clock at 2:18.01.

In Sunday's slalom race the Herons took second place with a team time of 5:10.63. The race featured 43 racers and saw three Herons finish in the top five. Junior Katherine Broderick took third place with a combined time of 1:43.01. Winch continued to shine and finished fourth with a time of 1:43.30, while senior Marjorie Plants finished fifth with a combined time of 1:44.32.

Along with William Smith's second place finish at the Regional Championships, the Herons finished third in the regular season conference standings. Plants was named to the Mideast Conference First Team after a dominant season for the Herons. It is the second time of her career being named to the All-Conference team.
 
UP NEXT:

The Herons have officially punched their ticket to the USCSA National Championships and will head to Bend, Oregon, March 10-15, to compete on Mt. Bachelor. It is the first time in program history that both Hobart and William Smith Alpine skiing teams have qualified for the national championships in the same season.
