Mia Iwicki was named the SUNYAC Women's Hockey Goaltender of the Week by the league office this afternoon. She is the first Heron to be honored by the SUNYAC this season.
Iwicki guided William Smith to a pair of conference wins at The Cooler over the weekend. She stopped 72 of the 75 shots she faced, finishing the weekend with a 0.97 GAA and a .973 save percentage. On Friday, Iwicki made 43 stops as the Herons beat then No. 13 Oswego 2-1. Twenty of her stops came in the first period as the Lakers controlled the tempo of the game in the opening frame. She then made 14 saves in the second period and nine in the third to preserve William Smith's lead. On Saturday against SUNY Canton, Iwicki stopped 29 shots, including 11 in the third period, as the Herons beat the Roos 2-1 in overtime.
With the two wins, William Smith improved to 5-1-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in conference play. The Herons continue to receive votes (24 points) in the USCHO.com poll.
William Smith will be back in action this weekend, Nov. 29-30, when it heads to UMass Boston for the Codfish Bowl. The Herons open the tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they take on Bowdoin, which is also receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll.
