CLIFTON SPRINGS, N.Y.—The William Smith golf team squared off in a match play event with Geneseo at the Clifton Springs Country Club today. The Herons and Knights each won two matches with Geneseo earning the victory on the tiebreaker.

The top match proved to be the most dramatic of the day as Heron junior Caroline Gannon faced off with the Knights' Jillian Draper. Gannon was two up at the turn, but Draper held a two up lead with three holes remaining. Gannon won the 16th, halves the 17th and forced a playoff with a par on the 18th. Draper and Gannon halved the first two holes with Gannon taking the match on the 21st hole thanks to a par on No. 3.

William Smith took the No. 2 match in much less dramatic fashion. Senior Brooke Hogle secured a 6&4 win over Brooklyn Rogers.

Geneseo's Hannah Bechard defeated Heron sophomore Tara Valas 2&1. The Knights picked up their second win at No. 4 with Lydia Hickey topping sophomore Sophia Pomposello 8&7.

With the match tied at 2-all, total team strokes were used to determine the overall winner. Geneseo took the tiebreaker 347-368.

William Smith is back in action this weekend when the Herons compete in the 36-hole Liberty League Championships at Pine Haven Country Club in Guilderland. Saturday's first tee time is 12:30 p.m.
