Hobart Basketball to honor 2000-01 team during Alumni Weekend

The Hobart basketball program will honor the 2000-01 team on its 25th anniversary during the annual Alumni Weekend, Jan. 23-24. The current Statesmen will take on Union in Bristol Gym beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday and RPI at 4 p.m. Saturday. The alumni game is set for 11 a.m. Saturday.
 
Members of the 2000-01 team in attendance this weekend will be recognized on the court prior to Saturday's game. They are the first Hobart basketball team to earn an NCAA tournament bid.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HOBART
  • The Statesmen are 11-4 overall, 5-3 in Liberty League.
  • Hobart is coming of a weekend split in the North Country, beating Clarkson 77-63 on Friday before dropping a nail-biter at St. Lawrence 60-57 on Saturday.
  • Junior Alex Moesch leads four Statesmen averaging double digits. He's made a team-high 30 3-pointers while scoring 14.6 points per game.
 
SCOUTING UNION
  • The Garnet Chargers are 12-3 overall and sit a half game out of first in the league with a 7-1 record.
  • Union was home last weekend and recorded results similar to the Statesmen, beating Bard on Friday 89-60 before suffering a 76-74 setback to Vassar on Saturday.
  • The Garnet Chargers also have four players scoring in double figures led by junior forward Jack Plesser (24.4).
 
SCOUTING RPI
  • The Engineers have an 11-4 overall record and are tied with Union for second in the league with a 7-1 mark.
  • RPI went on the road last weekend and picked up a pair of wins, topping Ithaca 88-73 and RIT 79-62.
  • The Engineers have three players averaging more than 13 points per game led by junior guard PJ Scalisi (13.5).
 
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
  • Twenty-five years ago, the Hobart basketball team won its first conference title, defeating RPI 67-58 in the tournament championship game at St. Lawrence.
  • The Statesmen posted an eight-game win streak in January that matched the program record for consecutive victories.
  • They finished the season with a 20-8 overall record, setting several program season records including wins, games played, and rebounds (1,159).
  • Hobart Hall of Fame center Joe Corbett '03 was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year and NABC All-East that season after leading the team in scoring (18.9), rebounding (13.0), field goal percentage (.549), and blocked shots (18).
  • Forward Davidek Herron '03 was a second team All-UCAA pick that year after averaging 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds. He posted 12 double-doubles during the season and scored a team-high 19 points in the UCAA Championship game.
  • Guard Michael Gambino '02 was the team's top 3-point shooter, sinking 62 triples while averaging 12.6 points. He earned All-UCAA honorable mention.
  • Head Coach Rich Roche was voted the UCAA and NABC Regional Coach of the Year.
