3/30/2026 4:37:00 PM

William Smith junior Janey Sypeck was named the Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Defensive Performer of the Week by the league office today. In addition, senior Taryn Luzi was named to the weekly honor roll.

The Herons held at No. 8 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll and No. 5 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll after beating Vassar 19-6 on Saturday.

Sypeck anchored William Smith's defense as it held the Brewers to a season-low six goals and 13 shots. She had a game-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers in the victory. Sypeck also added an assist on the Herons' final goal of the game. A starter in all nine games, she leads the team with 24 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls. This is the second time in the last three weeks that Sypeck earned defensive performer of the week honors. William Smith has won the award in each of the last four weeks.

Luzi led William Smith's offense with seven points on six goals and an assist. She scored four of her goals in the first half as the Herons built a 9-5 lead. Her assist in the opening 30 minutes gave William Smith the lead for good with 4:30 left in the first quarter. She tacked on two goals in the second half. In her last two games against Vassar, Luzi has 14 points (13g, 1a). Luzi has 20 goals this season.

William Smith (8-1, 4-0) will be back in action on Wednesday, April 1, when it heads to the Flower City to take on Rochester Institute of Technology. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
