On April 22, 2017, the 1986 lacrosse team was honored as a Hobart Team of Distinction. The Statesmen went 15-1 and captured the program's seventh consecutive NCAA Division III National Championship. They outscored their opposition 324-132 ending the year on an impressive 15-game winning streak.
During the regular season, Hobart won all seven of its games against Division III foes by a combined score of 156-45. The only loss of the campaign came in the season opener to Division I Johns Hopkins, but the Statesmen bounced back with wins over DIs Loyola, Syracuse, Cornell, Penn State and Hofstra. The win over the Orange was especially sweet as it marked the first Kraus-Simmons Trophy game. Played on Boswell Field, Hobart broke open the contest during the third quarter with five straight goals from five different players.
In the postseason, the Statesmen dominated their early round opponents, breezing past Roanoke 29-1 in the quarterfinals and Cortland 22-8 in the semifinals. In the championship game, a familiar foe awaited as Hobart took on Washington College for the title for the fourth time in five seasons. Four minutes into the fourth quarter, the Statesmen trailed the Shoremen 9-8, but Mike Guy '87 scored back-to-back goals to complete his second half hat trick and spark a four-goal Hobart run that secured the title.
When the postseason award winners were announced, Hobart took home the lion's share, led by Tom Rosa '86 who was the Iroquois Nationals Award winner as the national player of the year. Ray Gilliam '87, Bill Bergan '86 and Devin Arkison '87 were chosen as the attackman, midfielder and defenseman of the year, respectively. In total, seven Statesmen earned All-America honors.
