A four-year letterman and standout attackman on the lacrosse field, Thomas M. Gravante helped the Statesmen capture the NCAA Division III National Championship in each of his four seasons. The two-time first-team All-American led Hobart in scoring as a senior, notching 66 goals and 22 assists for 88 points.
The Camillus, N.Y., native capped his collegiate career with a then championship game record seven points in an 18-9 win over Ohio Wesleyan. The outburst—part of a 17 goal effort (also a then tournament record) in the Statesmen’s run through the postseason—earned him the Brine Award, as the game’s most outstanding player. During his senior year, Gravante was named the Judge Thomas Kane Memorial Trophy winner as team MVP and the Jack Turnbull Award Winner as the Division III Attackman of the Year. He finished his career with 141 goals (6th all-time) and 69 assists (12th all-time) for 210 points (6th all-time).
Since 1993, Gravante has been a member of the Mount St. Mary’s University men’s lacrosse coaching staff, including the past 11 seasons as head coach. He has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times and led the Mountaineers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003. Gravante was named the 2002 Howdy Myers Man of the Year by the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and the 2006 Jim Muhlfelder Award winner for service to lacrosse by U.S. Lacrosse.
