Box Score Fourth-ranked Hobart College advanced to the third round of the Division III Men's Soccer Tournament for the first time in program history with a 1-0 win over Cortland State this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen remain unbeaten with an 18-0-3 overall mark, while the Red Dragons wrap up their season with an 11-7-3 record.
First-year forward
Tommy Hayes (St. Anthony's/East Northport, N.Y.) headed in a cross from senior midfielder
Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) for the only tally of the game in the 66th minute. The goal marked Hayes' third of the season, and Riso's team-high 25th point.
The Statesmen dictated play for the majority of the match, as they out shot Cortland 28-9, and held an 11-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Hobart had a few good scoring chances in the first half, and senior midfielder
Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) was at the center of most of them. At the 9 minute, 28 second mark, Schoeniger booted a free kick that nearly snuck in just under the crossbar, but Red Dragon goalie Jack Carillo was there to punch the ball over the net.
With 13:57 left before the break, sophomore
Justin Dotzman (Council Rock South/Holland, Pa.) threw a long ball into the six yard box straight to the head of Schoeniger for a shot on net. Again, Carillo came up with the save.
In the second half, Schoeniger had another chance on a free kick just outside the 18 yard box, as did senior midfielder
Tyler Webster (Acton Boxborough/Acton, Mass.), but both sent the shots high over the goal.
Hobart senior goalkeeper
Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) stopped three saves as he notched his season record-breaking 11th shutout of the year, while Carillo finished with 11 stops for the Red Dragons.
The Statesmen will meet Ohio Northern University (19-5-1) in the NCAA Tournament third round next weekend; date, time and site will be announced later.
