POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—While the eyes of the golf world may have been focused on Augusta National, William Smith's
Colleen Richards was busy making history at the par 72 Dutchess Golf & Country Club. The senior became just the second Heron golfer to card a hole in one in the second round of the Vassar Invitational.
Standing on the tee of the par 3 eighth, Richards selected an eight iron and then covered the hole's 138 yards in one stroke. The only other William Smith golfer to record an ace is Val Dolan '06 (Oct. 9, 2004). Overall, Richards turned in a round of 95, an 18 stroke improvement over her opening round which placed her 47th in the 58 golfer field.
Senior
Lauren Carlson led the Herons with rounds of 92 and 90, placing 23rd in the field.
Wellesley's Kimberly Eaton was the individual medalist after negotiating the course in 81 and 82.
With three players in the top 5, Williams won the team title by five strokes over Amherst (686-691). William Smith was 11th out of 12 teams.
The Herons will return to the links on April 16-17 when they compete in the Elmira Invitational.
