Senior swimmers shine in home finale vs Cazenovia, Wells

GENEVA, N.Y. - The William Smith College swimming and diving teams collected a pair of dual meet victories over Cazenovia and Wells to improve to 10-2 in dual meets this year. The class of 2015 came through in a big way in their final home meet for the Herons.

William Smith defeated Wells, 143-42, and Cazenovia, 134-72. Cazenovia defeated Wells in both the women's, 124-68, and men's, 107-68, meet.

Sophomore Caroline Conboy's impressive season continued when she broke yet another Bristol Pool record this afternoon in the 100 breaststroke. Conboy easily won the event, outpacing the field by eight seconds. She touched the wall in 1:07.21.

Seniors Danielle Bagwin, Christine Rhoads, Samantha Burnett and Leah Jacob teamed up to finish ten seconds clear of the field in the 400-yard Medley Relay. The William Smith "B" relay team of first-years Emily Haskins, Kate Moreau, Ava Lillian and Phoebe Pohl finished in third place.

Rhoads, Burnett and Jacob each recorded an individual win for the Herons in their final meet in Bristol Pool.  Rhoads' win came in the 1000 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 11:53.46. Junior Brooke Adams finished second, eight seconds behind Rhoads. Burnett won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:04.88. Jacob won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 58.29. Bagwin had the second fastest time in the event.

The Herons recorded the fastest time in every event but the 500 freestyle. Haskins won the 200 freestyle with teammate with Kelsey McElwain finishing in second place. In the 50 freestyle, the Herons went 1-2 for the third straight event. First-year Katie Storch placed first with a time of 26.52. Conboy was just 4 one-hundreths of second back.

William Smith also got individual victories from Kelsey Bohl, Kate Mendez, and Storch in the 400 individual medley, one-meter diving, and the 100 freestyle respectively. Mendez, in fact, led a 1-2-3 sweep of the one-meter board. Junior Emily Feldesman and sophomore Lacey Denning finished second and third respectively.

Bagwin, Burnett, Jacob and Rhoads completed their collegiate careers with a 32-9 record in dual meets.

William Smith returns to the pool, Saturday, Jan. 31, for the Skidmore Invitational. The meet in Saratoga Springs, New York is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
