Herons cruise past Pioneers, Wildcats

UTICA, N.Y. —The William Smith College swimming and diving team won 10 out of 11 events to win a double meet with Utica and Cazenovia. The Herons defeated the Pioneers 148-46, and topped the Wildcats 151-29.

Sophomore Katie Mullin led off the 400-yard medley relay, and won the event in 4:28.30 with junior Sarah Berman, sophomore Robin Kirchgessner, and first-year Avery Palma. Mullin also won the 200 free, and recorded a time of 2:05.03. Mullin continued to dominate the meet with a 30.14 second win in the 50-yard backstroke.

Sophomore Emily Mink swept the 1,000 and 500-yard freestyle events. Mink finished the 1,000 free in 11:45.19, and recorded a time of 5:36.81 in the 500 free. Senior Anna Leffler dominated the 200-yard IM, touching the wall first at 2:18.46. She also won the 100 free with a time of 57.43, and finished second in the 500 free, stopping the clock at 5:44.25.

Junior Katie Neff led the 50 free with a time of 27.41. Kirchgessner posted a win in the 50-yard butterfly, finishing .24 seconds in front of Neff.

Junior Lindsay Fleischer finished behind Mullin in the 200 free. She also posted a third place finish with a time of 5:51.79 in the 500 free. Berman finished two seconds behind Cazenovia's Katherine Meehan for a second place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke.

The Herons wrapped up the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Neff, Fleischer, Mink and sophomore Olympia Canales stopped the clock at 4:12.72, finishing 26.23 seconds in front of second place Utica.

"It's been a great month of practice getting ready for this meet," said Head Coach R.C. Weston. "I've had this date marked on my calendar for a while, and to start off our first season together with a couple of wins really sets the tone for our program moving forward. The women swam their hearts out and finished strong. Knowing we have only touched the surface of our training, the sky is the limit for the Herons."

William Smith will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 2, when they host Alfred University at Bristol Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
