A stifling defenseman, Edward I. Howard was a four-year letter-winner and a member of the College’s first two NCAA Championship teams (1976-77). During his career, the Statesmen posted an impressive 49-8 (.860) record, including a 15-0 mark and the Division II/III championship in 1977.
A history major, he earned second-team All-American honors his junior year and first-team accolades as a senior. A co-captain his senior year, Howard received the Kraus Memorial Trophy as Hobart’s most outstanding senior athlete and the Graham Award as the team’s best defenseman that season. He also was selected to play in the annual North-South All-Star Game. Howard also was a member of the Hobart basketball team.
The Buffalo, N.Y. native was an active member of the community during his academic days, garnering the Roger Frankel Award as the senior who contributed the most to the Hobart community during his undergraduate career.
Upon graduation Howard worked with AETNA as an account analyst until 1986, when he became a casualty manager for Hartford Specialty Company until 1996 and Swiss Re America for the four following years. The vice president for Chubb & Son since 2000, Howard earned a certificate of insurance for Executive Development from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1998.
An outstanding three-sport athlete at Canisius High School in Buffalo, he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in October of 1998.
