The most successful head coach in the history of Hobart hockey, Mark Taylor’s resume includes more than 67% of the program’s all-time wins, all 12 of the program’s NCAA tournament bids, all seven of its conference championships and of course the 2023 NCAA Championship, the program’s first national championship.
An eight-time finalist for the national coach of the year award, Taylor won the award in 2023. He has been named conference coach of the year eight times. In 22 seasons behind the bench, Taylor has compiled a 378-174-54 record (.668).
When Taylor was hired to lead the Statesmen in July of 2000, he inherited a program that had suffered seven consecutive losing seasons and had never posted consecutive winning seasons. Including this year’s historic 29-2-0 record, Taylor has guided Hobart to 20 consecutive winning seasons.
A tremendous motivator and recruiter, Taylor has mentored 65 all-conference selections and 25 all-rookie team selections. All 18 of Hobart’s All-Americans have come during his time in Geneva. Five Statesmen have been named conference player of the year under Taylor’s leadership, including 2023 NEHC Player of the Year Luke Aquaro ’25, who was the runner up for the 2023 Sid Watson Award. Taylor has had four players earn conference defensive player of the year recognition and seven named the rookie of the year.
Taylor’s charges have also excelled in the classroom, boasting 241 conference all-academic team honors, 52 AHCA All-American Scholars awards and two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
In addition to winning a national championship in 2023, Taylor guided the United States to a silver medal at the FISU World University Games in Lake Placid. The Americans went 5-2-0 in the tournament picking up wins over Great Britain, Korea, Kazakhstan, Hungary and Japan. The USA won Group B and secured just their second medal in the tournament.
Before accepting his first head coaching position at Hobart, Taylor served as an assistant hockey coach at UMass Lowell, Cornell, Middlebury, Brown and Vermont.
A graduate of Elmira College, Taylor was the Soaring Eagles’ MVP and an All-ECAC selection as a senior. He transferred to Elmira after winning a pair of NJCAA Championships at SUNY Canton, earning All-American defenseman honors for the Northmen. Following his collegiate career, Taylor played two seasons for Ange in the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation.
