A two-sport star, Charpinsky was an exceptional basketball and baseball player for the Statesmen. The gifted leader served as a captain in both sports during his junior and senior years.

A talented scorer, Charpinsky’s skill on the hardwood was twice recognized with the Charles Love Memorial Trophy for character and sportsmanship. After finishing second on the team in scoring as a sophomore, he torched the nets in gyms across the area, averaging more than 18 points per game as a junior. In his final collegiate contest, Charpinsky scored a then Palestra (the University of Rochester’s home court) record 35 points.

On the diamond, Charpinsky was a fire-balling pitcher, who led the 1961 Statesmen to an 8-3 record, the team’s best record of the 1960s. That season, the right-hander led Hobart in wins, earned run average, and strikeouts. As a senior, Charpinsky was once again Hobart’s ace, compiling a 4-1 record. When he wasn’t on the hill, he played first base.

Charpinsky capped his career with the 1963 Francis L. “Babe” Kraus ’24 Award as Hobart’s Athlete of the Year.

In addition to his exploits in the athletic arena, Charpinsky was a proctor, a member of the Newman Club, and a member of the Phi Phi Delta fraternity.

Charpinsky graduated with a bachelor’s degree in American history with a minor in education. After graduation, he spent one year as a history teacher at Waverly High School before finding a home at Susquehanna Valley High School. Charpinsky taught history at the Conklin, N.Y., school for the next 36 years. He also coached the Sabers boys and girls varsity basketball and baseball teams. Charpinsky led the Susquehanna Valley girls to three conference championships during his tenure.
