A three-year letterman in both football and lacrosse, Arthur D. Stein Jr. ’36 was captain of the lacrosse team in 1936 and an honorable mention All-American. A dedicated student, he was recognized by the Orange Key Society, the Chimera Society, and Druids, Hobart’s sophomore, junior, and senior honor societies, respectively.
Stein is best remembered by his teammates for the field goal he drop kicked to beat Hamilton 9-7. His winning kick thrilled a Homecoming crowd of over 2,000 fans and sealed Hobart’s third consecutive victory in route to a 5-2 season in which the Orange and Purple outscored its opponents 158-53.
He was vice president of his class, as well as president of the Hobart Glee Club, and a member of the Board of Control. Stein received the Balfour Award as the man in New York, Ontario, and Quebec most representative of the qualities of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
Stein was a lieutenant commander in the Navy, serving in World War I and the Korean War.
