Richie Bonney stands among the most accomplished student-athletes in the history of Hobart basketball, distinguished by a rare combination of elite performance, academic excellence, and leadership that embodied the ideals of Division III athletics.

A native of Norwich, New York, Bonney arrived in Geneva and quickly developed into one of the Liberty League’s most impactful players. By the time he graduated, he had rewritten the Hobart record book and elevated the Statesmen’s profile on the regional and national stage. Over four seasons, Bonney grew from Liberty League Rookie of the Year into one of the most complete players in the country, recognized for his scoring ability, rebounding dominance, efficiency, and defensive presence.

Bonney led the Statesmen to a four-year record of 87-27, the most wins in any four-year period in program history. He played in four consecutive postseasons, winning the 2011 ECAC Upstate Tournament Championship followed by three straight NCAA tournament bids. In both 2012 and 2014, Hobart advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, marking the program’s first two victories in the Big Dance.

At the conference level, Bonney and his teammates finished first in the Liberty League regular season standings all four years, winning the conference championship tournament in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Bonney’s senior season in 2013-14 ranks among the finest ever produced by a Hobart basketball player. Serving as team captain, he started every game and led the Statesmen in scoring and rebounding while ranking among the national leaders in both categories. He finished his career with 1,738 points, establishing a new Hobart scoring record. His performance earned him unanimous Liberty League Player of the Year honors and first-team all-conference recognition, while also bringing him national acclaim.

That season, Bonney received the highest individual honor in Division III basketball when he was awarded the prestigious Jostens Trophy, presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding Division III men’s basketball player. He became the first Statesman ever to win the award, which recognizes not only athletic excellence but also academic achievement and community involvement. His on-court success also earned him All-America honors and a selection to the NABC Reese’s Division III All-Star Game.

Just as impressive as Bonney’s athletic accomplishments was his performance in the classroom. A double major in public policy studies and philosophy, he was named the Division III Academic All-America Team Member of the Year, becoming the first student-athlete from Hobart and William Smith to earn that distinction in any sport. He was a two-time Academic All-American and three-time Liberty League All-Academic Team honoree, reflecting the same discipline and commitment that defined his play on the court. He was also the 2014 Liberty League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the ECAC Division III Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
