Since 1988, Sally Scatton has directed one of the premier field hockey programs in the nation. Her Herons have captured three NCAA Division III National Championships (1992, 1997, 2000) and one ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship (1999) in 19 postseason appearances. William Smith has never suffered a losing season under Scatton’s watchful eye, compiling a 313-83-3 record (.788) entering the 2007 season.

In conference play, the Herons have won eight of 12 championships since the Liberty League was founded. An outstanding mentor, Scatton has coached nine Liberty League Players of the Year. The six-time conference coach of the year earned the NFHCA Regional and National Coach of the Year awards in 1992, 1997, and 2000, and garnered a fourth regional award in 2004.

Scatton recently served on the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Committee, serving as the chair in 2005-06. She is also a driving force in the highly successful Great Heron Road Race. The annual 5-kilometer run has raised more than $30,000 to aid in the fight against breast cancer.

An accomplished coach of not only field hockey, but lacrosse, basketball, and swimming as well, Scatton has also coached teams at Cornell University, Wells College, and Gorham (Maine) High School. Scatton was inducted into the Bombers’ Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Scatton’s sons, Brandon ’02 and Nathaniel ’06, are both Hobart graduates.
