Came to William Smith College in 1930 as an assistant professor of physical education. In 1934, she was promoted to full professor and became director of athletics, a post she held until retiring in 1967 (37 years). In recognition of her many contributions, she was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by the Colleges in 1970.

During her tenure at William Smith, Winn, together with Professor Janet Seeley, developed the physical education and dance programs and introduced intercollegiate athletic competition, organizing "Sports Days" with nearby women's colleges such as Wells and Keuka at a time when such competition was considered "unladylike" and even "unhealthy" by some college officials. She later helped found the Central New York Varsity Sports Organization, precursor to the New York State Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NYSAIAW) which is now known as the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA).
