Gilbert was a four-time USILA Little All-American attackman. One of only two Hobart players to receive All-America honors for four straight seasons, he was named a first-team All-American three times after earning honorable mention as a freshman.
Gilbert produced a USILA record 444 career points on 157 goals and a USILA career record 287 assists. He exceeded 100 points as a sophomore, junior and senior, setting the USILA single season record with 88 assists as a junior. Gilbert's 11-assist performance against Geneseo in 1973 is a Hobart record. He helped the Statesmen capture the 1972 USILA College Division Championship and led Hobart to the NCAA College Division championship games in 1973 and 1974.
