An attackman, Grimaldi was a three-time USILA Division III All-American. In 1983, he produced 37 goals and 19 assists for 56 points and was named to the All-America second team. His junior year saw Grimaldi record 45 points on 26 goals and 19 assists on his way to first team All-America accolades. In 1985, he notched a career-high 62 points on 33 goals and 29 assists and repeated as a first team All-American. Grimaldi was also the recipient of the 1985 Iroquois Nationals Award (national player of the year) and the 1984 Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award (national attackman of the year).
