Russell earned four All-America awards during his record setting football career, including two first team selections as a senior.

In 1997, Russell was named a first team All-American by both the Sports Information Directors and Don Hansen's Football Gazette. He produced Hobart season records with 22 tackles for loss and 14 sacks that year.

Russell was named to the 1996 Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-America third team and All-America honorable mention from the Division III Sports Information Directors. He made 80 tackles, including 14 sacks, and forced five fumbles.
